Palestinian police begin deploying in West Bank

Gaza: Hundreds of Palestinian policemen began deploying in the West Bank city of Jenin on Saturday after an agreement between Palestinian and Israeli top officials.

A police force of about 470 from Hebron, Ramallah and Jericho will provide help to Palestinian Authority forces securing Jenin.

"We expect them to also fight terror, but our expectations are not too high. Policing and enforcing order are also important missions," a defense official said.

The forces would target criminals like car thieves, and had orders to confiscate illegal weapons.

Israelis approved the reopening of Palestinian police stations in areas controlled by Israel in bid to help Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas enforce a security plan.
