Iran escapes further sanctions in new UN Security Council resolution

United Nations: Iran will not face any new sanctions proposed by the United States and its allies, but must halt any nuclear enrichment work, the United Nations Security Council unanimously voted on Saturday.

The new resolution calls for Iran to “comply fully and without delay'' with previous motions to halt enrichment.

The agreement was made on Friday by the five permanent Security Council members - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - and Germany on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

It also urges Iran to meet the requirements of the UN International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, which has said that Iran is not cooperating.

Iran, which insists that all nuclear work is for civilian purposes, denounced the move, saying: "Such moves are unwarranted and unconstructive."

The statement by Iran's UN mission added that all council moves on Tehran's nuclear program "lack not only fairness and objectivity, but also relevance and lawfulness."
