Clashes in Yemen kill eight people

Last updated:

Sanaa: Six Shiite rebels and two pro-government tribe members were killed in clashes in Yemen's northwest Sada province, a government official said on Tuesday.

Four troops were also wounded in the clashes between fighters loyal to rebel leader Abdul Malik Al Houthi and tribe members.

Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands have fled their homes in Saada since the conflict between Houthi rebels and government forces erupted in 2004.

The rebels say they are defending their villages against government aggression, while officials say the rebels want to return to a form of clerical rule in the country.
