Abu Dhabi: A 5-year-old child drowned on Saturday after he was swept away by the torrent in Al Shu’ara Valley in Tihama Al Baha, the Red Sea coastal plain, while a 9-year-old who accompanied him was rescued, officials said.
The boys were on their way to their home behind the valley when the tragedy occurred.
The elder one was able to hang onto a tree in the valley, while the torrent swept away the younger child. Immediately, the Civil Defence in Al Shu’ara Centre and Qilwa Governorate moved to the site, and the diving teams recovered the child’s body, which was sent to a government hospital for a postmortem report.
Meanwhile, the National Centre of Meteorology forecast the surface winds will be active, causing dust, and limiting the horizontal visibility on the southern coasts of the Mecca region, while the chance of rainy thunderclouds will continue, accompanied by active winds on the heights of Jazan, Asir and Al Baha. Weathermen also warned there are chances of formation of clouds and thunderstorms over the heights of Mecca and Medina.
