Cairo: Oman Friday confirmed 1,889 new cases of the novel coronavirus, taking the country’s overall infections to 53,614 amid an upward contagion trend in the sultanate.
The newly diagnosed cases include 1,268 Omanis and 621 foreign residents, the Health Ministry said, according to the Omani news agency ONA.
The ministry also announced eight new deaths from COVID-19, bringing Oman’s total such fatalities to 244.
The country’s overall recoveries from the disease have reached 34,255 , an increase of 1,234 against the tally reported the day before, the ministry’s update showed.
A supreme committee in charge of tackling COVID-19 this week vowed tougher penalties against violators of precautions to stem the virus spread. The panel has threatened to publish names and photos of violators in the media in an effort to oblige compliance with measures in place to control the highly contagious disease.
