Almost ten per cent of the country's annual deaths are caused by traffic accidents and on an average 50 people die every month on Omani roads, according to statistics from the Royal Oman Police.

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) have implemented aggressive policies in controlling speed, which according to their statistics causes 70 per cent of accidents in Oman. They include installing hundreds of radars and cameras.

"The surveillance radars and cameras are already proving to be a big deterrent and the number of accidents in the last two weeks has shown a decline," a ROP spokesman said.

The police blame reckless driving and speeding for the road fatalities. A senior orthopaedic surgeon refuses to term these incidents as accidents.

"These road fatalities are something that have become predictable and at the same time preventable, how can we call them accidents," said Dr Waheed Al Kharussi, Head of Orthopaedic Department at Khowla Hospital.
