Cairo: Hundreds of workers left two Kuwaiti industrial areas prior to the enforcement of complete lockdown there as part of tighter measures to bridle the spread of the new coronavirus, Kuwaiti newspaper Al Qabas reported.
Security men were surprised by the departure of a large number of buses carrying hundreds of workers residing in the areas of Mahboula and Jleeb Al Shuyoukh after word went around about a government decision to totally lock down both areas, the paper quoted security sources as saying.
“Security men’s investigations revealed that officials of those companies, after learning about the possibility of imposing complete curfew on the two areas, decided to transfer their labour to other places so that their work will not be disrupted,” the sources added.
Chief of Security Media Brig Tawhid Al Kandari told Kuwaiti newspaper Al Rai that police were keeping track of those who left the two areas. “Coordination will be conducted with the Health Ministry about these areas,” he added without details.
The Kuwaiti government Monday night announced putting Mahboula and Jleeb Al Shuyoukh under total lockdown with immediate effect for two weeks. Both areas are hubs for expatriate workers among whom a spike in infections has been recently recorded.
The lockdown is part of stricter government measures announced Monday evening including expanding a partial curfew in other areas until further notice and extending the closure of all state institutions until April 26.
