Missing Madeleine's parents take their search to Spain

London: The parents of Madeleine McCann took the search for their daughter to Spain yesterday.

Kate and Gerry McCann were to appear on a Spanish TV programme dedicated to missing children. They held a press conference calling for any information about the four-year-old.

They will also meet British Ambassador Denise Holt, Spain's Interior Minister Alfredo Rubelcaba as well as representatives from child welfare and anti-paedophile organisations.

Spain has been preoccupied by its own case of child abduction recently - seven-year-old Yeremi Vargas disappeared in the Canary Islands two months ago. He was playing outside his home when he vanished.

Series of visits

Travelling to Madrid, the McCanns want to highlight child abduction as well as appeal for information about their daughter. Yesterday's trip is the second of a series of visits around Europe since Madeleine was snatched from her bed in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz four weeks ago.

On Wednesday, the couple were in Rome for an emotional meeting with the pope. Next week, they plan to travel to Berlin, Amsterdam and Morocco.

For yesterday's visit, the couple decided to leave two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie in the Algarve in the care of McCann's sister Trish Cameron and her husband Sandy.

The cost of the trips will be paid by the Find Madeleine fund that has raised £374,000 (Dh2.7 million).
