Medvedev, Sarkozy discuss situation in Georgia

Last updated:

Moscow: French President Nicolas Sarkozy discussed the situation in Georgia with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday, the Kremlin said.

Medvedev told Sarkozy, in an hour-long telephone conversation, that Georgian troops must withdraw to their barracks according to the French-brokered ceasefire.

"The Russian side has stressed the need for Tbilisi to carry out point four of the Medvedev-Sarkozy plan, under which all Georgian troops should be returned to their original bases," the Kremlin said in a statement detailing the conversation

“(Medvedev and Sarkozy) also discussed additional agreements, which may in future ensure safety in the areas near the borders of South Ossetia and Abkhazia," the Kremlin statement said.

Sarkozy's office has not yet commented on the talks.

Western states have strongly condemned Russia's recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
