Manila: A radio commentator was shot dead on Monday in southern Philippines' Misamis Oriental, reports reaching Manila said.

Two gunmen shot Arecio Padrigao around 7am after he dropped his daughter to the Bukidnon State University in Gingoog City.

Padrigao is a commentator for dxRS and hosts the morning programme Sayre ang Katilingban (Know the Society) over Radyo Natin in Gingoog City.

Reports said the assassins were riding in tandem in a motorcycle when they shot Padrigao.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead several minutes later.

According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, Padrigao is the sixth member of the press killed this year and the 61st since 2001 when Gloria Arroyo assumed the presidency.

The Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) condemned the perpetrators of Padrigao's assassination.
