Manila: The Philippines is the fourth largest source of child pornography in southeast Asia, a police report said, adding this should alarm Congress and make lawmaker pass a Bill to stop the proliferation of pornography through the internet.

"The government cannot track down and arrest operators of internet pornography because there is no anti pornography law in the Philippines," said Chief Superintendent Rodolfo Mendoza, deputy director for the investigation and detective management.

Those who were arrested were accused of violating the anti trafficking law. The Philippines is behind Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar in the proliferation of internet pornography, said Mendoza.

Operation of Internet porn networks earns as much as $1 billion (Dh3.67 billion) a year, Mendoza said, adding that it is an underground business interest.

The issue was discussed during a seminar titled Building Alliances to Combat Child Pornography, sponsored by the United Nations Children's Educational Fund (Unicef) at Manila's College of St. Benilde Hotel.
