Musharraf will not step down, says spokesman

Last updated:

Islamabad: A spokesman for President Pervez Musharraf has strongly refuted a newspaper report that the retired general had offered to step down in return for indemnity by the parliament for his unconstitutional steps in November last year.

Speaking to domestic Dawn News television channel, the spokesman, Rashid Qureshi, said no constitutional package had been sent to the presidency nor it was under discussion between the ruling Pakistan People's Party and the presidency.

Campaign

Qureshi, a retired major general, said it seemed that a campaign against the president was being carried out by some political elements and it also involved some elements in the media who "conjure up" baseless stories.

"It is absolutely false that the president has agreed to resign," Qureshi said.

Rashid Qureshi criticised the concerned TV channel for airing and commenting on such an issue without knowing the facts.

He said the media report in this regard was baseless and false.

Rashid Qureshi said it seems that a section of the media has become a propaganda machine, which has been hired to launch such things against President Pervez Musharraf.

On Wednesday, the president of former ruling PML-Q party Chaudhry Shaujaat Hussain and another party leader Hamid Nasir Chattha met the president.

According to media reports the PML-Q leaders said the president had no intention to quit and would complete his constitutional term.
