Lawyers postpone protest campaign

Last updated:

Islamabad: The Pakistani lawyer community on Friday postponed a planned aggressive campaign after the ruling coalition decided to restore all the deposed judges after the impeachment of President Pervez Musharraf.

A new September 15 deadline for the reinstatement of the judges was announced after a meeting of representatives of bar associations that discussed the coalition's fresh commitment.

The previous August 14 deadline was given by a representative convention of lawyers held in Lahore on July 19.

Supreme Court Bar Association president Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan told the media that the ruling coalition's move inspired confidence and lawyers were optimistic about the restoration of the judges.

He however made it clear that if the judges were not reinstated by the new deadline lawyers across the country would go ahead with their plan to stage sit-ins and rallies leading to a civil disobedience movement.
