Islamabad: At least 18 people were killed and around 50 others were injured in a bomb attack on Tuesday after a suspected suicide bomber detonated a bomb inside a police garrison in the town of Kohat in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, officials said.
Police said a vehicle packed with an estimated 200 kilograms of explosive was used in the attack at iftar time that destroyed some 20 family quarters.
Most of the casualties were mostly police personnel and members of their families, private and official television channels said.
The bomb attack was the second in two days targeting the police in the province where the army has been battling militants belonging to the banned Tehreek Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the tribal areas along the Afghan border.
Provincial Information Minister Iftikhar Hussain said Taliban militants were attacking police and their families in a bid to intimidate the authorities. He said the police in the province are highly disciplined and determined to fight and defeat the terrorists.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani strongly condemned the bombing in Kohat.
On Monday a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a police station in the town of Lakki Marwat in Khyber Pakthunkhwa, killing 19 people including nine policemen.
