Alappuzha, Kerala: A policeman who allegedly set his colleague on fire died in the Medical College Hospital in Alappuzha on Wednesday evening, where he was also treated for burns, said doctors.
Ajaz, a policeman working at the Aluva Traffic police, was close to 32-year-old Soumya Pushapakaren, who worked as a policewoman at the Vallikunnu police station. Last Saturday, she was pushed off the road by his car before being stabbed and doused in petrol and set ablaze.
She died instantly. However, during his attack on her Ajaz also suffered burns. He was rushed to the hospital.
His condition turned worse, and he died around 5.40pm on Wednesday, police said.
His arrest was recorded and his statement taken by a magistrate.
He told his friends during this time that he had lost control of the situation.
Ajaz wanted to marry Pushapakaren - and they had financial dealings in the past.
The incident occurred at Mavelikera, near here, last Saturday when around 3pm Pushapakaren was going from her home to the Vallikunnu police station, where she was stationed.
Ajaz rode up in a car behind her two-wheeler and rushed her off the road.
He then proceeded to kill her.
Before she succumbed to her injuries, Pushapakeren managed to run into a house nearby, police said.
