100 Tibet protesters 'surrender'

Beijing: Chinese state media say over 100 protesting Tibetans have surrendered to police in and around the regional capital of Lhasa.

The announcement comes as China ignored calls for mediation, denouncing the Dalai Lama as a “wolf in monk's robes.'' Rhetoric from Chinese officials has been strongly-worded, saying they are locked in a “life and death'' battle with protesters.

It is difficult to confirm the announcement as foreign journalists are banned from entering Tibet, and there are few independent observers in Lhasa. Chinese officials did not provide specific details.

Last Sunday, the communist government promised leniency for those who handed themselves in – and pledged to harshly punish those who did not.
