US allies impede Gitmo releases: report

Last updated:

Washington: Britain and other US allies have blocked efforts to release prisoners at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, media reports said.

British officials recently rejected a US offer to move 10 former British residents to the United Kingdom, saying it would be too expensive to keep them under surveillance, The Washington Post said on Tuesday, citing documents.

All British citizens in Guantanamo were freed starting in 2004 but Britain will not allow them to return to the country, the newspaper said.

Germany and other European allies also have rejected prisoners from the facility, the Post said.

Human rights groups have criticised US practices at Guantanamo, where detainees have been held indefinitely without charge.
