Kenyan opposition vows to stage election protest rally

Last updated:

Nairobi: The Kenyan opposition leader has said he will press ahead with plans to stage a rally in the capital Nairoi, even though it has been banned by the police.

Raila Odinga's decision also comes amid growing violence over the presidential election which has seen more than 300 people killed in the past week.

But he claims the rally, to be held in Nairobi's Uhuru Park, will send a peaceful message to president Mwai Kibaki.

Kibaki was announced as the winner of a closely fought election but huge doubts have been raised about the transparency of the poll, with claims of vote rigging and EU observers saying it didn't come up to international standards.

Odinga's team have said the eyes o the world would be on this rally so they would not be causing trouble.

But Vice-President Moody Awori said: "Please do not risk the lives of Kenyans.''
