Workshop to fight human trafficking

Abu Dhabi: A two-day workshop on combating human trafficking was opened on Sunday.

Organised by the United Nations Office for Combating Drugs and Crimes, and the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi, the workshop will focus on the fundamentals of investigation and suing people involved in human trafficking.

Dr Hadef Jua'an Al Daheri, Minister of Justice, opened the workshop in the presence of Dr Anwar Mohammad Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking.

The workshop is attended by more than 30 judges, public prosecutors and law experts who will highlight the issues of human trafficking and the legal fundamentals of interrogation with criminals involved in such crimes.

Al Daheri underlined the ministry's support for international efforts to fight the crime and human trafficking, as well as the continuous cooperation with countries and UN organisations.

He reiterated the UAE's commitment to UN protocols and conventions related to the fight against the crime. Al Daheri also spoke about the importance of setting national laws to live up to international initiatives on combating human trafficking.

He also highlighted the procedures taken by the UAE, especially Federal Law No. 51 of 2006, to fight human trafficking, which is the first law of its kind to be issued by an Arab country.
