Sharjah: The Transport Authority, in an effort to improve transport safety, yesterday signed an agreement with the Swedish Institute to train drivers.

Abdullah Al Zari, director general of Sharjah Transport, said the objective of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was to enhance the performance of drivers.

"We want to promote a culture of commitment to the rules of traffic among our drivers, through training and rehabilitation and we will provide them with seminars and training courses."

Al Zari noted that both the public and Sharjah Transport will benefit from the agreement, since the training programme will improve awareness about how to drive safely, as well as developing the skills of the drivers.

He stressed the need to educate drivers about road dangers and the need to obey traffic rules.

Increasing competence

"This agreement is a positive step towards upgrading the transport services in the emirate of Sharjah to the highest level, which is done by increasing the level of competence in drivers and training them on how to deal with passengers," said Omar Mohammad Al Owais, a senior official at Sharjah Transport.
