Abu Dhabi: "We will correct the elders if they make a mistake while driving," said a group of Arab pupils, from an Abu Dhabi School, on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of the GCC Traffic Week, which was held at Marina Mall in the capital. The event was organised by the Abu Dhabi Traffic Police.
An accident involving a young boy still haunts Obaid Saleh, 11. Obaid is a sixth-grade Emirati student at Zayed Al Thani School in Abu Dhabi.
"During a recent visit to Sharjah with my parents, I happened to witness a car hitting a boy who was crossing the road."
He noticed that the boy did not check the road for traffic before crossing.
"It seems he was absent minded," said Saleh. "Lack of attentiveness on the part of pedestrians causes a lot of accidents. I will tell everybody - my family members, relatives and friends, not to jaywalk."
Mohammad Ahmad, 11, another Emirati pupil, said he had noticed that motorists, including family members, used their mobile phone while driving, despite repeated police.
He resolved to remind elders against such practice.
