Dubai: A total of Dh541,500 in fines have been collected in the past 10 months from car rental offices found breaching regulations, the Licensing Agency of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has revealed.

An approximate 6,854 RTA inspection visits to car rental offices in Dubai, over the January to October 2009 period, unearthed a total of 125 violations.

Nabeel Yousuf Al Ali, director of the Control and Inspection Department of the RTA Licensing Agency, said that 83 violations in 2008 had resulted in a total of Dh337,500 in fines. He added that there was an increase of 51 per cent in the number of violations this year compared to 2008.

Al Ali said that control and inspection operations are based on two main factors — the maintenance of public security in collaboration and coordination with the concerned authorities, and the realisation of the RTA's vision to have "safe and smooth transport for all".

Penalties

Al Ali pointed out that the violations involved nine items. He further said that the amount of fines for each violation ranged between Dh500 and Dh10,000. He added that harsher penalties included the closure of the facility altogether.

He said that the majority of violations reported against car rental offices fell into three main categories — failure to operate the electronic link-up system; failure to enter required data pertaining to the people renting out cars and employed staff; and delays in the process of entering the required data pertaining to clients and employed staff.
