Amended traffic laws impose stiff penalties

Last updated:

Dubai: The amended traffic laws have imposed stiff penalties against heavy vehicle drivers who commit dangerous traffic offences such as overtaking, leaving the load of the truck uncovered, and failing to stop at a red light, warned a police official.

"Most traffic offences committed by heavy vehicle drivers require confiscation of the vehicle, which can extend for 30 to 60 days," said Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department.

Some of the violations that will result in confiscation include dangerous overtaking by heavy vehicle drivers, driving a heavy vehicle without abiding by safety and security rules, overloading of heavy vehicles, not covering the load in trucks, driving on banned roads and areas and driving with unfit tires.

Brigadier Al Zafein said this year the Traffic Department referred 25 heavy vehicle drivers who failed to stop at a red light, to the Criminal Investigation Department to carry out their deportation procedures.
