Al Ain speedsters warned they will be prosecuted

Al Ain: Traffic police have launched a crackdown against drivers violating speed limits on the city's roads, where more than 15 people have lost their lives in just a week.

Careless driving and speeding were the main causes of the recent accidents, said the traffic police, adding that motorists must take the new federal traffic rules seriously.

Special teams of traffic police officials have been formed to keep an eye on violators, said Capt Mater Abdullah Al Muhairi, head of the ticketing and vehicle impounding section at Al Ain traffic police.

"Speeding and careless drivers have been posing a danger to the public's safety on the roads," he said, noting that drivers must be aware that police are going to take tough measures against them.

Traffic teams, he said, are equipped with radar guns and will be conducting surprise checks on roads in the city and highways leading to other cities, he said.

Al Ain is known for its wide roads, low traffic congestion and fewer speed traps.

Many people believe the absence of speed traps has been encouraging motor-ists to drive too fast.

The campaign will start on Sunday. Drivers will not only get tickets but also black points under the new federal traffic law, said Capt Al Muhairi while talking to Gulf News.

"Motorists must know their responsibility and keep to speed limits," he said.

He said traffic police issue on average 90 tickets a day to errant drivers. "These violators have also been accumulating black points and they will soon know what these points mean," he added.

It is the collective responsibility of motorists, traffic police and residents to make roads safer for all.

"Culprits on the city's roads will be punished according to the the law," he said.

"We have been creating public awareness on traffic laws and traffic violations," he said

Captain Al Muhairi recently conducted lectures on traffic safety at the UAE University and Armed Forces Club.
