Rash overtaking the main cause of traffic accidents in the first quarter of 2013
Abu Dhabi: Around 11 per cent of traffic accidents occurred in Abu Dhabi city during the first quarter of 2013 as a result of not abiding by the speed limit and overtaking at a red signal, the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate said in a statement.
“A new system to monitor violators who overtake and jump red lights has been implemented. Around 40 surveillance cameras have been installed at different intersections in the capital to watch speed violators,” said Jamal Salem AL Amiri, public relations manager at the department.
Under the new system implemented in all emirates, speed violators could loose their license.
Additionally, stiffer penalties ranging from facing a Dh800 fine with eight black points and seizing the vehicle for 15 days will be imposed on drivers who commit offences and fail to reduce speed at signals.
Al Amiri called on drivers to respect traffic regulations in order to avoid accidents for the welfare of society.
“Such drivers are endangering their own lives as well as the lives of others. Drivers should respect the law and avoid driving offences such as jumping red lights and reckless speed to avoid penalties and black points,” he added.
