Rendering the UAE: The weaver

A simple ribbon, an old piece of lace, discarded bits of embroidery, tarnished silver, colourful beads and swatches of forgotten fabric — while all these items are of no value to many, to Minakshi Nagu, they are invaluable little treasures, that woven together form the colourful patchwork and appliqué work accessories that her brand Ragmatazz is known for. Her work comes in sophisticated patchwork, often multicoloured prints that are strong, modern and multinational.
Nagu’s exclusive and one-of-its-kind bag and clutch are created especially for National Day to depict pride and nationhood. “Flags have long been symbols of solidarity and patriotic fervour. So what could be more appropriate than to create a series of works that embody the colours of the UAE flag, besides using one of the most significant representations of the Arabic culture — the Ghutra scarf. The embroidered calligraphy piece in the centre says Watani which means ‘My Homeland’,” she explains.
An Indian national, Nagu has spent a quarter of a century in the UAE and calls it home. “Part of what I love about living in the UAE is also what has consistently inspired my work. We’re so lucky to live in such a multicultural environment, located in the centre of the world and the bag is a classic example of this coming together.”
