Performers from 35 countries come to town

Abu Dhabi: Performers from 35 countries will participate in the 2006 Al Ain Aerobatic Show to be held from January 11 to 15 at Al Ain City, according to an official.

Remote control airplanes, airplane stunts, free diving shows and night shows will be taking place in the five-day air show, held under the patronage of General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Sup-reme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

The show has been organised by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, UAE Air Force and Air Defence.

Shaikh Sultan Bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority and Chairman of the Organising Committee, said at a press conference yesterday the show was an opportunity to present the UAE's achievements in all areas, "especially sports and tourism promotion in Abu Dhabi".

"The event also seeks to firmly position Al Ain city's name on the world map of international sports events in the region," he said.

The UAE Air Force and Air Defence will participate with single and group formation shows, using the Mirage 2000 and the F16 airplanes.

In addition to the air shows, a photographic exhibition of the late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nah-yan will be staged, along with university fairs and a military museum. Heritage village activities will also be on offer.

Staff Major General Pilot Khalid Bin Abdullah Al Bu Ainain, Air Force and Air Defence Commander and Deputy Chairman of the Organising Committee, said safety and security issues were the most important things they were focusing on.

"The safety of the performers, audience and properties are very important. The Air Force has proven its responsibility at previous events.

"The main objective of this international championship is to spread public awareness on aviation, particularly among our youths regarding military and civil aviation," he added.
