Mother repeats plea to hire carer

Sharjah: The mother of Palestinian doctor Reem, who has been in a coma for three years, has repeated her plea to Sharjah Naturalisation and Residency Department (SNRD) to be allowed to sponsor a carer to help her ill daughter as the mother's salary is not enough to sponsor a domestic helper.

Despite the fact that Gulf News readers want to bear expenses for a maid for Reem, SNRD is not accepting the application because the mother's salary is too low to sponsor a maid, Gulf News has learnt.

"I must earn more than Dh5,000 monthly salary in order to be able to sponsor a carer for my daughter. But my salary is lower than that," Um Ramzi, Dr.Reem's mother said.

She reiterated her plea to SNRD to allow her to sponsor a carer for her ill daughter under humanitarian ground. "I wish the residency department would allow me to sponsor a domestic helper for my daughter," she said.

The family also cannot afford the fees charged by the Ministry of Interior for expatriates to sponsor domestic helpers.

Responding to the mother's plea, many readers contacted Gulf News for the past two days to offer financial support to the family. Some have offered to donate the full fees required to sponsor the carer.

Um Ramzi said she was contacted by many who read her plea and offered help but she hopes that SNRD will also respond.

Dr. Reem, who delivered twins about three years ago, remains paralysed and in a coma at Al Qasimi Hospital after complications resulting from a Caesarian section.

The family's torment continued recently after the hospital asked Dr. Reem's mother to take her daughter home, as they need the bed for another patient.
