Care centre to help trafficking victims

Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi government has announced a Dh8 million contribution to set up a centre for victims of human trafficking in the emirate.

The move is in line with the directives of General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

Meanwhile, Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the UAE General Women's Union and Honorary Chairperson of the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA), donated a plot in Abu Dhabi where the centre will be built.

The care centre will provide a safe shelter, healthcare and social support for women and child victims of human trafficking.

Strategy

Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the RCA, said Shaikha Fatima's initiative and Shaikh Mohammad's support would give a boost to the UAE's strategy in combating human trafficking and alleviating the suffering of victims of crimes against humanity.

"The UAE always pays great attention to women and children and endeavours to adopt initiatives that safeguard and preserve the dignity and humanity of this particular segment of society," Shaikh Hamdan said. Earlier, Shaikh Hamdan issued a decision setting up shelters across the UAE for women and child victims of human trafficking.

"The UAE endorsed international conventions related to fighting human trafficking such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1997, and the UN Convention against Transnational Organised Crime," Shaikh Hamdan said.

He added that the UAE strongly supports international efforts to fight human trafficking, and will spare no effort to support human issues and global efforts in fighting poverty, unemployment and a poor quality of life.
