Fire erupts at supermarket

Dubai: A handful of residents living on Maktoum Road on Wednesday were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at the supermarket located on the ground floor of their residential building.

There were no casualties reported and the cause of the fire is still being investigated by Civil Defence and Dubai Police.

Residents came across black smoke billowing from the supermarket at 4:10pm. Six fire brigade vehicles were quickly dispatched to bring the fire under control.

Families living on the floors above the supermarket were evacuated for a short period and were able to return to their apartments gradually by 6pm.

Mohammad Iqbal who works in the building located close by said that paramedics swung into action to treat those suffering from smoke inhalation. "The entire Maktoum Street was shrouded with thick black smoke and traffic was thrown into chaos. The entire supermarket has been gutted," he said.
