Dubai: Residents will soon be able to learn all about the special properties of trees and plants mentioned in the Quran – once the Quran Park is opened in Al Khawaneej in 2014.

During Dubai Municipality’s technical meeting yesterday, officials confirmed that the Quran park will be completed by September 2014.

“The park has already been opened with a jogging and cycling track over a distance of 3.2 kilometres, but by July 1, we will start the first phase of the park’s garden and start working on five out of the 13 plant sections,” said Eng Mohammad Mashroom, Director of General Projects Department at Dubai Municipality.

Speaking at the municipality’s 1,000th technical meeting, Mashroom explained that the initial development has been ongoing for the last two years, and that construction will be done at a total cost of Dh40.5 million.

The park will be solar-powered and will be divided into several parts, including the main entrance with an Andalusian themed garden and the middle section of the park will have an oasis theme.

Covering a span of 60 hectares, the Quran Park will feature 35 plants out of the 54 mentioned in the Quran.

“Twenty will be planted outdoors while 15 will be in greenhouses, and even though only a few of them are endemic to the UAE, the rest of the plants will be imported from other Arab countries,” said Mashroom, who pointed out that some of the trees include the palm tree, the fig tree and mangroves.

“In the project’s construction, we were able to save an accumulated total of Dh12.2 million simply by gathering up to 960,000 cubic metres of materials salvaged from construction sites, such as sand and concrete,” said Mashroom.

He also noted that while the first phase will be carried out from July 1, 2013 to July 2014, the second phase will be completed from July to September 2014.

“Once the park is completed, we will provide visitors with a tunnel that will guide them on all of the major miracles mentioned in the Quran, which will also be equipped with audio and visual aids,” he added.
