In January, Vancouver in Canada began its Zero Waste Challenge recycling programme.
For the first stage, residents were told which materials had become mandatory to be recycled.
Participants are given different coloured containers in which they can sort their recyclables. These are available either online or at municipalities.
There are two versions of the recycling programme. One is aimed at families, who are given boxes to collect waste and place them on the sidewalks where they are collected and taken to recycling centres.
The second target group is people living in apartments. These participants are given wheeled carts in which to place their materials.
There are two educational programmes in place. In the Community Education Programme residents are encouraged to participate in workshops and contests to help spread awareness. The Elementary and Secondary School Education Programme is aimed at pupils.
