Al Ain: The Centre of Waste Management has launched a new environmental initiative, with students' help, to collect waste from homes in the oasis city and recycle it after proper sorting.

The campaign will start on Sunday and students from different public schools and universities will participate in it, said an official of the centre. The drive is a part of a larger recycling project that will be implemented in different zones of the city.

Al Masoudi, a district in the north zone, and Falaaj Hazaa, a district in the south zone, have been selected for the launch of the campaign from Sunday until December 24, said the official.

As per the project's plan, old bins will be replaced with two bins of 240 litres per household.

The first bin, said the official, is green and will be for recyclable material such as glass, plastic, cans and paper. The second bin is black and is for the rest of the waste.

"The project will also be implemented in the rest of Al Ain city in accordance with the centre's schedule," he said.

Appeal

Majid Al Mansouri, managing director of the Centre of Waste Management, Abu Dhabi, has requested Al Ain residents to cooperate fully with the project. He said it is an important initiative that will improve the aesthetic appearance of the city as well as enhance the cultural and behavioural values.

Al Mansouri said a healthy and clean environment is very important and people from all walks of life should support and help the project.

The centre has already informed various educational institutions that have positively responded to its call.

"We highly appreciate the cooperation of the schools and the students for coming forward and setting a precedent for other residents of the city," the official said.
