Environmental blog covering our natural world
Of the geese, the grey lag and the white-front goose visit the country almost every year.
However, unlike other migratory birds like the flamingos, gulls and terns, these migrants come only in ones or twos.
During a recent bird-watching trip to the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, I saw a flock of large birds hovering over the mangrove bird-watching hide on Al Aweer Road. They veered towards Al Khail Road and landed on flat ground sandwiched between two huge blocks of mangrove vegetation.
I managed to get a few shots. Later, when I saw them on the computer, I realised they were a flock of 31 geese — the highest number so far in the UAE as per local bird experts.
This is a good sign because such large birds definitely consider places like the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary safe for landing.
