Visitor arrested for consuming drugs when he went to tip off police

Dubai: A visitor has landed in court for using drugs after he was arrested when he went to inform on other peddlers at the anti-narcotics department.

Records said the anti-narcotics police arrested the 42-year-old Iranian visitor after suspecting that he was high on drugs when he arrived to the anti-narcotics department to snitch on a number of peddlers whom he claimed were consuming drugs on a boat.

"I am innocent ... I took drugs but not here. I consumed it in my homeland," the suspect, M.A., told the Dubai Court of First Instance. He also provided Presiding Judge Abdul Majid Al Nezamy with his passport to confirm his claims that he was in Tehran before his arrest.

Charge

The Public Prosecution charged him with consuming morphine, codeine, and consuming tetra-hydro cannabinol (THC), an active component of hashish.

An Emirati anti-narcotics police captain testified that the suspect arrived at the station and claimed that some suspect possessed drugs and were using them on a boat berthed in Dubai.

"The tip off turned out to be a baseless ... we suspected him as he behaved strangely and he wasn't convincing. He was taken to the anti-narcotics department where he was examined and tested positive for drugs," the captain said.

A verdict will be heard soon.
