Fujairah: Three brothers have lost an appeal against a criminal court conviction for threatening and assaulting police officers and must serve a total of seven months in jail.

Their 17-year-old sibling S.M., was also convicted by the criminal court on the same charges and was handed back to his parents, under their full responsibility.

The incident occured when a crackdown by Fujairah Police on unruly motorbike riders led to a confrontation between a unit of officers and the four Emirati brothers.

The police unit, which was on patrol in the area of Safad, spotted five bike riders and wanted to stop them for questioning. The brothers rejected orders to stop and a chase ensued and the police cornered the youth. The five abandoned their bikes and tried to run away but were stopped after an altercation.

The prosecution charged the brothers with threatening a public employee and physical assault on a public employee while performing his duties.

The court convicted all four brothers of the charges against them and sentenced B.M., 22, and H.M., 26, to five months in jail and M.M., 20, to four months.

The appeal court reduced the sentence of B.M., to three months and of H.M. and M.M. to two months each.
