Stimulant abuse 'must be tackled'

Dubai: The chief of Dubai Police has called for an awareness campaign on the abuse of stimulants in bodybuilding.

He was speaking at the sixth annual symposium for best police practices which concluded on Thursday.

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim called for developing the symposium further, as it is considered one of the best symposiums in highlighting best police practices around the world.

"We will work hard to turn this regional symposium into an international conference so that more countries can participate and share their expertise in the police field," Major General Abdul Qudoos Abdul Razzaq, Director of Dubai Police's Total Quality Department, said.

He praised the German practice regarding taking care of victims of crime, especially children. He also covered the issue of stimulants used in bodybuilding and the dangers to users' health.

Major General Abdul Razzaq said the symposium also recommended activating the media's role in highlighting the dangers of sports stimulants and finding a mechanism to consider the use of such stimulants a crime. The symposium also recommended legislation to protect victims of crime and to highlight the role of social organisations in cooperation and prevention.

Other recommendations included suggesting legislation regarding an air cargo agency and generalising Dubai police's practice of issuing traffic fines using a mobile phone's MMS service (Multimedia Messaging Service).
