Dubai 'requires latest security equipment'

Dubai: Development of Dubai city and its large projects require the latest security equipment and experience, the Dubai Police Chief said yesterday.

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Chief of Dubai Police, opened the region's biggest police, fire, security and safety trade fair yesterday.

"The city is witnessing a construction boom and we are faced with huge expansion in Dubai," Lieutenant General Dahi said.

"In the next seven years, it is expected that Dubai will have 80 hotels in addition to many more shopping malls. These projects require security equipment exhibited in this fair," he added.

Dahi said the UAE strongly condemned the London bombings and they cannot be justified because there is no logic behind them.

"It is important to educate each other on defying terrorism-organised crime; keeping tighter border controls, fire safety and public security," he added.

Tarique Gaffur, Assistant Commissioner of London's Metropolitan Police, presented a paper on current global policing and security issues in which he discussed the general impact of globalisation.

Sharing information

Gaffur later spoke about his impression and experience on the exhibition and Dubai generally. He said the exhibition is a journey to fight all crimes including organised crimes.

"Dubai is a gateway to South Asia. About one million people visit Dubai each year, therefore it is crucial to share information and Intelligence with Dubai Police. We need their assistance and they need ours," Gaffur told Gulf News yesterday.

He said there are many similarities between Dubai Police and London Police and that "police to police there is no difference".
