30 people sentenced to jail for illegally entering UAE
Abu Dhabi: Twenty-seven men were convicted on Monday by the Federal Supreme Court for illegally entering the country.
Three women from Kazakhstan were also found guilty on similar charges.
Nineteen out of the 27 men pleaded guilty in the hope of receiving a lighter sentence.
The typical sentence for such a crime is six months in Al Wathba Prison, counted from the date of incarceration, after which the convicts will be deported back to their respective countries.
The nationalities of the men convicted are mostly Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi, with two Somalians.
Every week, more than 20 cases are brought before the court on similar charges.
The Federal Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the land, has been trying such cases in order to help relieve lower courts from being clogged by minor cases.
