Sharjah residents using abandoned spot to dispose of waste
I have been staying in Abu Shagara, Sharjah, for many years. An area next to our building was left barren for a long time. Residents of nearby buildings used to park their vehicles there.
However, almost three months ago, a portion of this area was taken up for construction activity. As a result, we have had difficulty parking our vehicles. Some of the parking spaces were taken up by recovery trucks and a portion by used car dealers.
Meanwhile, many changes took place at the construction site. Barricades were put up and the land was levelled almost immediately.
Large trucks, which were used to carry sand, did their share of work at night. It was a real nuisance to people residing in buildings very close to the work site.
In fact, my building was one amongst them. Each one of us thought that a building would rise very soon in our midst. But one fine day, all the work came to a halt. When the construction work stopped, it seemed like there would not be any problem. However, recently, I came to know that people have turned the site into a garbage dump for their waste.
It is shocking to compare the state of the site from a few weeks ago. It makes me wonder how people could dump their rubbish so carelessly when there are garbage bins in almost every nook and corner. I found pillows, cartons, strollers, milk and juice bottles and lots of plastic bags among the debris.
There are many residents who played a role in making the construction site this bad. Some have even begun to stick up advertisements on the barricades, about babysitting services, bed space and moving homes. I hope the authorities take this matter seriously and find a solution immediately.
