UN imposes air blockade on Iraq
1990 - The United Nations Security Council imposed an air blockade on Iraq and Kuwait, barring passenger and cargo traffic except in humanitarian circumstances. The vote was 14 to 1, with Cuba casting the sole negative vote. Foreign ministers from 13 of the Council’s 15 member nations voted under the chairmanship of Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze, underlining the gravity with which they regard Iraq’s annexation of Kuwait. In an effort to further tighten economic sanctions against Iraq, the resolution attempts to block air corridors by calling on all states to deny permission to planes bound to or from Iraq or Kuwait to take off from or fly over their territories. Exceptions are flights carrying medicine and foodstuffs approved by the Security Council.
