The crash on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway was a talking point for bloggers

Inevitable

Since Tuesday morning the media has been full of the carnage of the country's worst traffic accident, caused by brainless, moronic, criminally stupid people.

There can't be a driver in the country who isn't aware of it. But I've come to the conclusion there's nothing we can do about it.

The fact is, that's how people are. They are morons. They are brainless. They are criminally stupid. And they're all around.

Short of having compulsory intelligence and common-sense tests and euthanasing everyone who fails — what an empty planet we'd end up with — I can't see an answer to the problem.

Slow down

If you can only see 10 metres ahead of you, you should not be travelling so fast that you cannot stop within, say, eight metres. Got it? Your car is probably no longer than 2.5 or 3 metres long.

To be able to stop in such a short distance, you should be crawling at less than 10kph (166 metres per minute).

And forget about being late for work. You are going to be late for work. And so is your boss and so are your colleagues. You will not score any brownie points for beating them. Especially if you are dead.

The point is that in seriously thick fog, you must think like this: can I stop within the bounds of the wall of fog I see before me? If you don't think you can, SLOW DOWN!

Be Careful

I have never seen such a horrible and terrifying accident in my whole life. Not even on any of the James Bond movies...

I just have a request to the readers: Try and drive carefully... especially during bad whether conditions... Maybe this disaster arose from one person who was driving restlessly.

BE CAREFUL... OF YOUR LIFE AND GIVE SPECIAL CARE TO YOUR FELLOW BEINGS.

Narrow Escape

News reporters say that this accident happened at around 6am to 7am yesterday. Before that, we passed that same road at around 5am.

That time the fog was so thick you could only see a distance of about 3m ahead of you.

We were running 140kph and I think that was pretty fast — I want to get mad with our driver.

What I did was I did not sleep and I kept eyeing our driver and the road. I told myself, if there's a car accident ahead, we won't see it for sure and we'll surely bump and collide against other cars.

Then, just an hour or so upon arriving home, the most horrific car accident ever recorded in UAE, wherein 200 plus cars crashed in a chain reaction, happened in Ghantoot, a road between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

When I arrived home yesterday evening, our driver, who is also one of our brethren, told me about this news.

Carnage

We've had several days of thick fog in the UAE. Whenever there are difficult driving conditions, be it sandstorms, the Great Flood of 2008 or thick fog on the roads, nothing changes.

The guys who drive at 180kph don't take into account the road conditions or lack of visibility, their idea of defensive driving is to still drive at 180kph, but with their hazard lights on.

This huge smash on the road between Dubai and Abu Dhabi is the result.

Simply horrible

There was a horrible car pile-up on Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway early this morning due to the densest fog the UAE has ever witnessed. Here I am attaching some photos, a video and an eye witness account.

I've never seen such a horrible thing happening in the UAE before. Baghdad sprang up to my mind (evoked by the burning mixture of steel and tyres) when I saw these pictures.

Is it just me?

Is it just me (and Mars) — or does anyone else find those cars in flames given the carnage on the [March] 11th quite puzzling? I am confused how several vehicles caught fire? It seems they were up in flames on impact or something?

The flames seem to be on the cars and not spread across the highway — which should be the case perhaps given the leaking petrol? Am I missing something? Thoughts appreciated.
