UAE dethrone Kuwait to walk away with crown

Dubai: The UAE dethroned Kuwait to win the basketball crown on the penultimate day of the Eighth GCC Ladies Championships being held at the Sharjah Ladies Club.

The UAE 'A' conquered Qatar 75-49 in a nail-biting match to claim the gold ahead of defending champions Kuwait.

Kuwait added more misery after they went down to Bahrain 67-58 score to finish down the standings.

In the volleyball tournament, UAE 'A' powered their way to a 2-1 win against Qatar.

Ala'a Ebrahim Hijris of Bahrain claimed the individual table tennis crown with a 3-0 win against Jenan Ganem of Kuwait.

Majid Mohammad Al Baloushi of the UAE ended with the bronze medal.

Majid expressed her satisfaction with her performance in this competition. "My ambition was to secure the championship but I realise that I could have been more prepared, especially considering the wonderful performance and training level of my competitors from Bahrain and Kuwait," she said.

There was cheer for the Oman side as they notched their best performance in the basketball competition following their 58-46 win against the UAE 'B' side. This was the first win for the Omanis in this competition. Nada Qaseer, the volleyball coach for UAE 'A' applauded her team's performance.

"Although our team has proved itself, we must be wary of the progress made by other teams," the coach said.
