Top seed Behroozian wins men's singles title

Abu Dhabi: The UAE's Omar Behroozian justified his top seeding when he easily won the men's singles tennis title in the Armed Forces Officers Club's (AFOC) Ramadan Games on Saturday night.

The top seed outclassed fourth seed Issam Jallali of Tunisia 6-1, 6-2 to carry home the Dh 25,000 cash prize as winner.

Bahroozian will now take a shot at the Premier singles event, which he lost in the final last year. The event has attracted a quality field from the region. Karim Maamoun of Egypt and Mohammad Al Ghareeb, have been seeded one and two while Mohammad Maamoun of Egypt is the third seed.

Bahroozian is seeded five behind Julien Maes of France with Malek Jaziri of Tunisia also in the fray.

"I fought for every single point and managed to dominate the game. I am happy to win a tournament after nearly two months as I am participating only in international events unless it is a major event,' said Bahroozian, who was in complete control winning points with superb shots down the flank.

Good news

"Tunisian Issam is a fighter and on his way to the finals he defeated many good players but in the final he made many unforced errors" said Bahroozian, ranked 750 in the world.

The Tunisian won Dh15,000 for his effort but there was more good news for his country through Selima Sfar. Sfar, who won the doubles title, went on to add the singles title. She defeated her doubles partner and second seed Bianca Bonifate of Romania 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the women's final.

"I wanted to win both the titles and I feel I am lucky I could accomplish it in my first appearance in Abu Dhabi," said the 29 year-old Tunisian, ranked 201 in the world.

In the boy's singles (Under-16) top seed Hamad Abbas of the UAE won 7-6, 6-1 to avenge his defeat to third seed Mohammad Al Issawi of Jordan in last year's final.
