Giles begins Creek club captaincy stint in style

Dubai: Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club welcomed their new 2009 club captain Francisco Giles with the traditional drive-in off the first tee on Sunday during the Monthly Medal event.

Under the watchful eyes of all the members and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club's senior management staff, Giles managed to tee off safely, with the wind pushing the ball unfortunately into the left fairway bunker.

This, though, did not stop the new captain from making a birdie to start off his captaincy stint in style.

Giles, a member of Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club for 12 years, said: "It is a privilege to be chosen captain at such a fantastic golf club. I look forward to the year and will also try to get the juniors more involved. I would like to congratulate Adel Zarouni for accepting the nomination to be my vice-captain for 2009."

D.D. Lee won the overall January BMW Medal with a superb nett 65. The windy conditions did not stop Lee from blowing the entire field away by five shots.

Finishing in second place in the men's division 'B' was Philippe Tartaglia with a nett 72.

In the men's division 'A', Bayhaan Lakdawala, with a superb one-under par 70, had the lowest gross score of the day.
