Beat Fujairah Club for Shaikh Maktoum Trophy and claim Indian Association Sharjah crown
Dubai: The Dubai Duty Free volleyball team clinched a rare double when they walked away victorious in their very first appearance in two tournaments during Ramadan.
The Dubai Duty Free team won the Shaikh Maktoum Ramadan Championships held in Fujairah and then secured the top honours in the Indian Association Sharjah Championships held in Sharjah.
The DDF team did well to beat Fujairah Club 32-30, 25-22 to claim the Shaikh Maktoum trophy in Fujairah, while they powered their way to a 3-1 victory against the Ras Al Khaimah Duty Free team to win the Indian Association Sharjah crown.
The tournament in Fujairah attracted six teams from all over the UAE and the DDF side won all five matches to meet Fujairah Club in the finals.
The competition in Sharjah had eight teams with most of them featuring national squad players from neighbouring countries.
"This is the first time that we took part in these two competitions and we are thrilled to come out winners in both," noted Hashim Uppukandy, volleyball team manager for the DDF team.
With Mohammad Saghir as the coach, the DDF volleyball team has won just about everything on the domestic volleyball scene for the past 15 years.
"This is a very good team that is capable of raising its level depending on the opponents," Uppukandy said.
