Quality of cricket in Windies is poor - Dyson

Abu Dhabi: West Indies coach John Dyson is a disappointed man at the 3-0 defeat to Pakistan in the Fortune Cup.

He did not mince words when asked about what went wrong with the youngsters in his team. "It shows they are just inexperienced for this stage of cricket. They don't play a lot of cricket in the West Indies. The West Indies Cricket Board is now looking at the amount of cricket that is actually being played there," Dyson said.

Dyson feels that players must come into the international team after coming through a strong system and a sound basic game.

"The frustrating part of the international sport is that it is all about winning and what is more frustrating is getting young inexperienced players in the team who do not have the basic skills for this standard of cricket," he added.

Dyson, who was one of Australia's finest top order batsmen, said: "I have told West Indies cricket board in numerous occasions to have a look at the players emerging from the Australian system. I talk about that system because I am an Australian and I know it better than the other systems. By the time a player comes into the Australian side he would have played umpteen first class matches of good quality," he said.

No comparison

"Shield Cricket in Australia is of very good quality and unfortunately in West Indies they come out of regional cricket, which cannot be in any way be compared to Shield cricket. So most players come out of a system unprepared to play against international teams," he revealed.

Dyson feels that some players have got the potential and others have got skills but they need to work a lot to perform at this level.

"At this level it is about trying to win matches and it should not be about trying to teach the players on how to play the matches," he said.

Dyson praised the efforts of his senior players.

"All the three senior players did well. Gayle got two centuries, Sarwan scored two sixties and Chanderpaul hit a century. You could not have asked anything more from them. Unfortunately no one clicked along with them."
