ADNOC’S NEW LOW CARBON VERTICAL: ADNOC’s new international growth vertical has come barely a week after UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan presided over the annual meeting of the ADNOC Board of Directors in his capacity as its Chairman. During the meeting, the board had approved a capital expenditure of Dh550 billion ($150 billion) for 2023-2027, and also directed ADNOC to pursue a Net Zero by 2050 ambition to support the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. At the same time, the board also endorsed plans to bring forward ADNOC’s 5 million barrels per day oil production capacity expansion to 2027, from the previous target of 2030. For an outsider, these objectives may seem to be in conflict. How can one company speed up fossil fuel production and at the same time pursue Net Zero ambitions? However, this is exactly what the world needs right now – a fine balance of energy supply until the rest of the world is fully prepared to migrate to green energy. Curtailing supply now will risk an energy crisis, which parts of Europe are already facing. Despite being a top global energy supplier, UAE is leading the way in energy transition, an example for all to follow. (By Anupam Varma, Assistant Editor)

SPAIN PREPARED FOR PENALTY SHOOTOUT WITH MOROCCO AT FIFA WORLD CUP: Last night we saw Japan fail in successfully converting penalty kicks against Croatia when their last 16 match needed to be decided on a shootout. But Spain coach Luis Enrique says his players have been practicing by taking thousands of penalties and he hopes this will pay off against Morocco if they are needed when the teams clash tonight. Japan looked woeful in the shootout. They were a bag of nerves and their spot kicks were unconvincing and three were easily saved. Enrique says he set his players the task over the last year in anticipation of facing spot-kicks in the knockout stages in Qatar. Spain were eliminated on penalties by Italy in the semi-finals of last year’s Euros. The coach will not want his team to go out this way again. (By Imran Malik, Assistant Sports Editor)

MORE ROYAL DRAMA EXPECTED: The new trailer for Prince Harry and Meghan’s Netflix docu-series was released recently and has promised more secrets to be revealed and even more insight into the couple’s lives than ever before. It’s no wonder that Netflix has jumped in to cash in on the intrigue that surrounds them both, which only intensified after their interview with Oprah Winfrey. It also seems that Harry and Meghan are determined to tell their story in their own words and break away from the moulds they were expected to conform to. However, with these shows and documentaries, they are also exposing themselves to the world further instead of getting out of the limelight. (By Jennifer Barretto, Assistant Editor – Entertainment)
