Given the advances in medical science, information must be accessible
Cancer has been called the plague of the 21st century. Being diagnosed with this disease prompts a lot of questions, from how to treat it to whether it can be cured. Answers aren’t always readily available, which is why an organisation like the Positive Cancer Foundation, an independent institution that aims to spread community awareness about the disease and the needs of patients, is so important. The foundation, launched by the Ministry of Social Affairs, will hopefully do much to support cancer patients in the UAE.
But more is still needed. In the Middle East, 8.4 per cent of men and 9.4 per cent of women will be diagnosed with cancer before they reach the age of 75, according to the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer. Over 53,000 new cases are discovered in this region annually.
Given today’s advances in medical knowledge, there is no reason these people and their families shouldn’t be able to find out what they’re dealing with.
