Authorities in Sharjah have announced plans to revamp old areas of the city and give it a fresh and modern look while still retaining its picturesque appeal.

As part of these plans, the city's old quarter will be filled with museums and will have a new hotel as well. This Heart of Sharjah project began last week and the first phase is due to be completed by 2012. The entire renovation, preservation and development of Sharjah old town is expected to be fully completed by 2025.

In recent years, the emirate has taken great strides to become a focal point for heritage and culture, highlighting arts and literature and all aspects of cultural life. Its diverse initiatives are a model to other emirates struggling to come to grips with the retention of the old and invention of the new.

The Heart of Sharjah initiative is most welcome and merits full support.
